A Coffee House Dedicated to Antiracism

THE BRAND
Justice or Just Ice is a play on words to give the coffee shop personality by only serving cold or iced drinks. It is also a way to playfully acknowledge the “iciness” and lack of engagement that many people have toward addressing and discussing their internalized racism. This brand was created for the purpose of educating Americans on antiracism by hosting talks, discussions, book clubs, and events over a cup of iced coffee or tea. It is a space to thoughtfully engage in critical conversation about race in the United States. The coffee house includes a bookshelf of strictly Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) authors for guests to browse as they sit down for a drink. These books are present in the coffee house because they are representative of the United States culture. This country is a melting pot of all different backgrounds. White culture is just one aspect of United States culture, yet it takes up most of the space in society. BIPOC have important history and their lives and experiences are essential to understanding life in the United States.
For my physical exhibition, I created a logo of two black women hugging to suggest a positive and safe space for Black individuals. I screen printed the logo at 18x18 inches to create signage for the brand as well as laser printed a menu and a sign with the name of the Coffee House. On the menu board, I included a list of upcoming events which would take place at the coffee house including a Black Lives Matter book club, a talk by Ibram X Kendi, and Strategic Plan for Antiracism discussion. These are all events that anyone could attend to learn more about Antiracism.
